SOCIAL NETWORKS AND LAWYERING IN THE 21st CENTURY
At the advent of the new mileninium, men every where experienced an upsurge in the amount of information at their disposal as knowledge and information could be shared and transfered from one continent to another at the blink of an eye lid. With the democratization and liberalisation of information arose a new myriad of challenge as government could no longer draw an effective red line between what is classfied and secret information. However the new media as it is also known has also opened up new vistas of opportunites to people around the world today , effectively connecting demand and supply and providing more than just an avenue for social frolicking and relaxation as serious business deals are opened and closed online, thereby blurring national borders.
What the above represents is that no indivual (especially Lawyers) that is serious about being relevant in today's increasingly competitive world can choose to stay outside the trend or without basic knowlegde of how to cash in on the opportunties available on the social media.
The social media presents opportunity to lawyers to project a positive image and build a unique personal brand identity. That has the potential of increasing their client base and also building on their industry or market visiblity. It is therefore very important to be very delibrate and intentional about the image we project
on line. It becomes very strange therefore to find a lawyer posting lewd pictures online or posting pictures that are unprofessional. and unbecoming of a learned indivual. I often laugh when I see my friends using their under grad. Pictures as profile pictures. While it is true that law is a very conservative profession, however lawyer are also expected to be up to date in social trend's. A clean portrait size picture with you dressed corporately sends a powerful message about your personality.
LINKEDIN
Linkedin is a must for every lawyer today.in fact most serious advocates have abandoned facebook and actually pay huge sum's of money to experts to help them manage their linkedin pages. While I will not advise you to abandon facebook as that will cut you off from her over one billion users. I will strongly recommend that you pay more serious attention to linkedin. While facebook is a social network I believe linkedin is a business network. I had to recently edit my bio on facebook because I was becoming uncomfortable with the kind of people that had acess to my wall and the kind of conversations that most of them tried to initiate. With me . However no such worries exists with linkedin as it is mainly a platform for very serious minded professionals and enterpreneurs. With over 8.5. Professionals on board and over 500, 000 high net worth indivuals and top recruitment officers on board. Linkedin has become the number one destination for HR and recruiting firms. Jobs or business offers gotten on linkedin are verified thus eliminating all the fear of scam and fraudulent. Transactions that is now common with other social media platforms. Next to your email I believe linkedin should be the first thing every lawyer should check online everyday.
It is also important to delibrately build a strong network of connections on this new media platforms. It is nearly useless to just open an account if you have no intention of frequently updating it and responding to trends and conversations that are initiated by your friends or. Connections. The only time you know some people exist online is when you get their birthday notifications. All this social network introvertism can be detrimental to building a 21st century pratice as many times a client may feel slighted if their messages are ignored or are not responded timeously.it is therefore important to frequently go online to at least check our inbox and respond to pending messages.
Lawyer should pay keen attention to their e-lawyering skills especially the new media platforms as it becomes increasingly difficult to work effectively as a lawyer today without them.

Popular Nigerian Actress,Caught Stealing...Beaten Mercilessly
I'm beginning to think that this beautiful actress, Yetunde Akilapa, has some serious spiritual problem:
She was caught earlier in 2013 with about 100 master keys trying to
steal valuables in her compound in Lagos in a very controversial
matter, but she was later released. Just this week, the same actress
has been again in the act in the Magodo area of Lagos. On the morning of Sunday January 12, 2014, there was a loud noise around No 15 Ibitayo street, in Magodo Phase 2, Lagos, as people were shouting ''thief thief''! and running after a lady in black dress...
The lady, without shoes, tried running inside a walled estate.
Unfortunately for her, before she could get to the gate, the security
on duty mobilised and caught her.
She was escorted back to number 15 Ibitayo street where she had earlier been caught inside one of the master bedroom with a bunch of master keys hidden in her brassiere.

Actress Yetunde Akilapa was beaten mercilessly before she was later handed over to the police. So sad!

The bike, which has an estimated cost of £12,000, will be sold with no reserve in order to raise as much money as possible for Caritas Romas.
The charity hope to use any money to renovate a soup kitchen in Rome which offers food and shelter to more than 1,000 people.
Ben Walker, head of motorcycles at Bonhams, said: 'We are incredibly honoured to be selling this item on behalf of Caritas Roma. We hope to be able to do both Pope Francis and Harley-Davidson proud by raising a significant amount of money for a very worthy cause.'
Four days after being given the gift, His Holiness blessed a group of 100 Hells Angles in St Peters Square

Two choppers and a leather jacket were given to the pontiff in June last year in order to celebrate the 110th anniversary of Harley Davidson.
Four days after the gifts were given to him, Francis blessed a crowd of Hells Angle bikers in a congregation at an open air mass in St Peter's Square.
It is not the first time that a papal vehicle has been sold in order to raise money.
In 2005 a Volkswagen Golf which belonged to Pope Benedict was sold anonymously on eBay to German man.

yesterday Francis encouraged women to breastfeed their babies if they
were hungry, saying they were the 'most important' people there
It was only when he looked at the registration documents that he realised who the previous owner was, prompting him to re-sell the car for £127,000 to a Las Vegas club.
Yesterday Pope Francis was pictured blessing children in the Sistine Chapel in Rome, and encouraged mothers to breast feed their children if they wanted, adding that the children were the 'most important' people there.
During the Baptism Of The Lord mass he washed the heads of 32 children, including one baby of an unmarried couple.

How coffee can perk up your memory: Drinking a strong mug after a learning session can improve recall
- Researchers in Baltimore, Maryland, carried out tests on 100 people
- Showed them a series of images which they had to remember
- Then gave some participants 200mg of caffeine - the same as a strong cup
- Those who took dose could remember pictures more clearly the next day
Boost: Researchers found a strong cup of coffee can improve people's ability to recall images
In a study of more than 100 people, scientists said a 200mg caffeine pill – equivalent to a strong mug – taken soon after a learning session improved image recall.
Participants had to identify pictured objects as either outdoor or indoor items, before taking either the pill or a placebo five minutes later.
Saliva samples were taken beforehand to measure their caffeine levels and again one, three and 24 hours afterwards.
The next day, they were shown some of the same images, plus similar ones and random new ones.
Both groups correctly identified pictures as being new or old, but those on caffeine were better at spotting the similar alternatives.
Those who received the placebo incorrectly identified these as the originals from the day before, showing that caffeine enhances certain memories at least up to 24 hours after it is consumed, according to the findings published in the journal Nature Neuroscience.
Dr Michael Yassa, of the University of California, Irvine, said: ‘Caffeine enhanced consolidation of long-term memories.

Improved: Those who took a dose of caffeine
after a period of learning were able to identify pictures more
effectively the following day than those who did not take the pill
The brain’s ability to recognise the difference between two similar items reflects a deeper level of memory retention, researchers said.
Dr Yassa added: ‘If we used a standard recognition memory task without these tricky similar items, we would have found no effect of caffeine. However, using these items requires the brain to make a more difficult discrimination, what we call pattern separation, which seems to be the process enhanced by caffeine.’
The research is different from most earlier experiments that found caffeine had little or no effect on long-term memory, because the subjects took the caffeine only after they had viewed and tried to memorise the images.
Dr Yassa said: ‘Almost all prior studies administered caffeine before the study session so if there is an enhancement, it is not clear if it is due to caffeine’s effects on attention, vigilance, focus or other factors.
'By administering caffeine after the experiment, we rule out these effects and make sure if there is an enhancement, it is due to memory and nothing else.’
The caffeine-induced improvement was not seen with smaller doses of caffeine or when it was given an hour before viewing the images.

A
spurned teen took revenge on a girl by burning her face with boiling
water after she unfriended him on Facebook, according to police in
India.
The Independent reports that the boy, from Bihar state in northern India, came to the 15-year-old victim's house on Wednesday and said he had left his I.D. in the home. He then allegedly shoved the girl's mother aside and poured water on the victim's face.
The Times of India reported that the girl was taken to a hospital where she's being treated for burns to 20 percent of her face including her right cheek and right side of her neck.
Other outlets have identified the boy, but The Huffington Post has not because he is a minor and has not been charged as an adult. Police are currently looking for him after he fled, following the incident. He is an undergraduate student at a Muzaffarpur college.
In a translation of a statement to police obtained by the Hindustan Times, the victim said, "My father is a teacher and he (the accused) used to come for tuitions to our home. I accepted his (Facebook) friend request a year ago because I found him decent then. But of late he had become abusive and so I unfriended him last week."
Gawker reports that "with Facebook steadily becoming the exclusive means of communication among teens in India, tragic news stories involving young Indian Facebook users are similarly on the rise."
